Accounting update: Understanding the new FASB credit impairment model and other financial instrument changes.   Presented  by McGladrey Partner, Faye Miller, CPA.

New accounting standards on credit impairment as well as classification and measurement of financial instruments are expected to be issued late this year.  This discussion will focus on what you should expect and how to prepare. 

Banking Trends: Who's making money and how?  Presented by BMO Capital Markets Director, Larry Mending, CFA.

The presentation will deconstruct the ROE and key profit drivers of Maryland financial institutions and compare them to a group of national peers and top performing institutions.  The goal is to identify what is driving profitability for the top performing institutions and which levers can be pulled to improve profitability at the institution level.   He will also discuss properly structuring the investment portfolio to best position for an eventual increase in interest rates.   Finally, he will touch on a few specific relative value ideas to consider in the current environment.

Speaker Bios

Faye Miller is a partner in the National Professional Standards Group of McGladrey LLP.  She serves as a firmwide technical resource for complex accounting issues involving financial instruments, such as derivatives, hedging, alternative investments, other than temporary impairment, and liability versus equity treatment associated with complex equity and debt financing arrangements.

As a firmwide technical resource, Faye conducts training, follows recent developments, assists engagement teams and advises clients on these matters.  Faye also is a frequent speaker and author on topics involving financial instruments including proposed or recently issued related accounting guidance.

Faye brings over 20 years of experience in banking and public accounting to McGladrey, including serving as Director of Corporate Finance for a bank with $7 billion in assets, serving as an audit partner on numerous SEC registrant engagements for a regional firm, and serving as both an audit and tax professional while with a large national accounting firm.

Faye is a frequent speaker on topics such as new accounting pronouncements, financial instruments and other matters impacting financial institutions.   She is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Maryland, Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Past member of the AICPA Accounting Standards Executive Committee, holds a Bchelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master’s degree from Villanova University.

 

Larry Meding is the Director of Balance Sheet Strategies for the BMO Capital Markets Strategic Analytics Group. He is responsible for working with depository institution clients to stay abreast of the latest regulatory and accounting issues facing the industry and designing balance sheet and portfolio strategies to maximize income, while incorporating the client’s particular risk tolerance and policy constraints. Larry works closely with ALM partners to understand a client’s balance sheet risk position; the trading team to assist in identifying attractive bank eligible bonds; the derivatives group to analyze potential risk mitigating/income enhancing strategies; and regulators to stay abreast of industry trends and issues that may impact bank balance sheets. 

Larry’s career spans more than 20 years and has focused on covering financial institutions from a variety of perspectives. His broad experience includes: bank valuations, assigning ratings to public debt offerings, securities analysis, portfolio management, and balance sheet strategies. He utilizes this broad experience to assist bank clients with managing the expectations and competing interests of both shareholders and debt holders via strategic balance sheet initiatives.

Larry holds an MBA in Finance from DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, and a B.B.A in Finance from Western Michigan University. Larry is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds series 7, 16, and 63 licenses.
